just don't get caught
This is getting problematic now. Two posts, two subjects which have probably already clogged the tubes as much as we could want them to. So many opinions, so much waffle. And here's me imagining I have something to bring to the table.
To be fair though, it's not as if the internet is short of space just yet.
I was thinking about the whole MP expense kerfuffle. Naturally. I mean, who isn't? Toby Young pointed out the press hypocrisy, which interested me. Obviously it's slightly different for the press because it's not taxpayers money being abused. They're businesses and if they see fit to run like that then I guess they can.
What worries me is that whilst parliament can be held up for scrutiny, there's not really the same mechanisms for holding the press up for scrutiny. If they out and out lie then there are laws and they can be taken to task. But what about what about when they present the actual truth in unhelpful ways, or present the truth when the truth isn't going to help the situation, or present bad opinions, or just generally drive things into the ground and tear down tear down tear down.
This is treading into freedom of speech territory. Which I'm all for. However, just because you're free to say something, doesn't mean you should say it. For instance I'm free to say you're ugly. But I don't think it would help either of us for me to say it.
The problem and major sticking point in my mind is that it's all subjective anyway. One man's truth is another man's lie. If you can't even trust your own memory why should you trust anyone elses.
I don't think I've got a solution.
On that note, birth-long-weekend kicks off tomorrow. Got pubbage, QI, Pontins, Nandos, BBQ, pubbage and publunchage comin' right up. What times to be living in.
K I'm done.
